Psychological Evaluations 101: The Basic Information What is a psychological evaluation?

A psychological evaluation is a comprehensive assessment of an individual’s personality, behavior, cognitive abilities, emotions, and functioning to help understand their strengths and weaknesses.

Why would a psychological evaluation be beneficial for you?

There are numerous reasons why someone may benefit from a psychological evaluation. At times, it may seem that therapy is not enough or that the diagnosis and/or treatment plan appear to be missing something. Psychological testing and evaluation may be needed for accurate diagnosis and/or to rule out certain conditions. Testing can help clarify diagnosis, strengths and weaknesses, and guide the treatment plan. Testing can also examine underlying conditions that could be contributing to impairments in current functioning. For example, it can help identify issues with cognitive impairments, memory, attention, focus, learning, and/or learning disorders. Psychological testing and evaluations can also be court- ordered. For example, a judge may order a psychological evaluation as part of a family court proceeding.

What to expect during a psychological evaluation?

You decided that a psychological evaluation would be beneficial for you. The first step is completing the online paperwork, including the consent forms and intake paperwork. After you submit the paperwork, we will contact you about setting up an intake appointment. Psychological evaluations are a cash-based service and payment is required when setting up the intake appointment. The intake appointment is one to two hours long, which will be to gather information about reasons for referral, symptoms, personal history, and background. The testing session is approximately four to seven hours long, depending on the referral and number of tests. After the testing session, we will schedule a results session (one to two hours depending on the results and questions/discussion). You will leave the results session with a hard copy of your psychological evaluation, including a list of recommendations based on your test results.
